Thinking, Creating, Reflecting: Impacting the Future

Letter from the Board: August 21, 2022

Dear Parents, Students, and Friends:

There is an energy that permeates in anticipation of another fantastic school year. I hope you are as excited as we are to get this year’s learning activities running. As we anticipate this year, I wanted to take a moment to thank each of you for entrusting your child’s education to us. Our goal, in building the future leaders and learners of tomorrow, is to grow belongingness, empathetic hearts, and unhackable brains.

What do we mean by this? There is so much division in the world. While the good earth is rich and can provide for all, arbitrary barriers and greed build, each day, higher walls that hold in the stew of deceit, bigotry, and hatred. At Spectrum, all are welcome; not only that, everybody belongs at Spectrum. As they interact with each other, they understand their impact and learn to embrace diversity of thought, culture, and heritage. Finally, by constantly fostering a natural curiosity and love of learning, we build unhackable brains. Digital Marketing experts estimate that most Americans are exposed to around 4,000 to 10,000 advertisements each day. Politicians and elite people are trying every day to influence our actions towards their own ends. A natural curiosity is the strongest defense we have towards the infiltration of our hearts and minds. Again, your trust in Spectrum shows your commitment to raising a generation of independent thinkers who seek truth, justice, and equity above all else. Their commitment is not only to fight for themselves, but for others. This is just one aspect of many that builds the unhackable brain, which is the buffer against lies and division.

I think that is one of the most amazing impacts of our school. Alumni have gone on to great accomplishments, and they credit Spectrum for the amazing friends they have made, as well as the success they had in their secondary and higher education. That impact, though, is also dependent on your involvement as parents. The Spectrum model can be summarized as follows: Everyone, from the janitor to the head of staff, from the teachers to the principal, from the parent to the board president of the school, all of these people are working with the sole intention of molding a young mind to become a future leader, problem solver, and thinker to allow them to have the best opportunities in life. Therefore, I encourage you to engage with our school on all levels whether that be in the classroom, at events, donating to our fundraising campaigns, or volunteering as a board member or on one of the school committees. There is a place for you and we need your help. Please contact me if you would be willing to donate some amount of your time and talents for the betterment of our school.

I’ll get off my soapbox now. However, as we move into a productive and fun academic year, I promise you will see me and the Board at several events throughout the year. I hope that you will make the same commitment and that we can count on you, both now and in the future, to be the bulwark of our school’s present and future.

Kind Regards,

Andrew Mertzenich

Board President
