Dear Spectrum Families and Friends,
I was invited in the early 1990’s to contribute a chapter to a book called “Creating Democratic Classrooms” edited by Dr. Landon Beyer. Something I read very recently sounded so much like something I had written nearly thirty years ago that I found myself re-reading my chapter. It is validating that what is touted as “new ideas for education” was something I was doing as a teacher over thirty years ago. Dewey is in my educator veins.
A few people thought it would be interesting to share this excerpt with you, to show that I am deeply rooted by faith in children, student ownership of learning, challenging inequity, and reflection on processes and systems, and our own work in relation to those systems.
In essence, this excerpt shows what the draw to Spectrum has been for me, and affirms the directions I would like to continue to take the school as we move towards embedding the Relational Learning Framework more fully and deeply across the school.
