I just participated in a webinar on the “five pillars of reading” (phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, comprehension, and vocabulary) looking for ways to use artificial intelligence to understand better how our children are interacting with text. Motivation is a key aspect across all pillars.
How do we get our kids to love reading, and love reading to learn?
One recommendation is living literate lives ourselves, showing children we value reading, making reading fun, reading together. Most reluctant readers can’t resist being read aloud to by a loved one. It is at least a place to start. Find your favorite childhood book, and enjoy it all over again some evening or weekend with your child(ren).
Congratulations to those of you who have a reading habit at home. I have always found this challenging, and I encourage all of you to not give up!
